Consists of letters and other documents that refer to commercial, mercantile, and legal problems between 1672 and 1841. The deeds and surveys are for land in Westmoreland and Northumberland Counties, Va. Included is a relinquishment of dower rights by Martha Combs. Accounts received by Dr. Richard S. Hall feature a bill from a silversmith/locksmith and purchases of household items from local merchants. The Lee family documents include orders, accounts, and letters from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of particular note are a search warrant for stolen goods and letters regarding the sale of slaves. Other items make references to activities associated with tobacco farming. Documents relating to the Turberville family are most extensive. Letters and requests for payments addressed to George Turberville reveal something about his business activities and family life. Such activities as borrowing a slave, hiring an overseer, and selling fruit seeds are noted. Legal documents associated with Martha Turberville pertain to the settlement of her father's estate, including an injunction. A letter to her in which the writer asks to borrow a slave to white wash is also featured. Documents associated with Gawin C. Turberville deal with land, an overseers contract, and a claim to the estate of George Lee Waugh that describes inheritance laws in Virginia after the American Revolution. Papers letters and other items sent to Hannah Corbin primarily refer to Gawin Corbin's estate. Turberville and Corbin family documents suggest that there was a dispute over the distribution of Gawin's estate, which he left to his wife and daughter upon his death in 1760. Accounts regarding tobacco levies are also featured. Finally, the series contains prescriptions and medical advice from George Steptoe, dated 1781.
